A circuit is closed and the cars never go on public roads, so an own-car session, race-car rental or motorcycle training needs no road licence and no racing licence. Only regulated timed competition asks for a racing licence, which you can sort out when you want to go racing. Helmets and safety gear are all provided by the venue, and a marshal runs the briefing and helps you suit up.

Own car or rental race car
A coached rental package removes preparation work and suits beginners; an own car suits drivers who already have a suitable vehicle, a reliable mechanic and a return plan.

The rental contract: the rent is rarely the expensive part
- Deposit and maximum liability, and when it is returned.
- How collision, over-rev, tyre, wheel and chassis damage is charged.
- Whether driving time lost to red flags or faults is made up.
- How many sessions, and whether fuel, consumables, mechanic and coaching are included.
- Whether a car is shared, and the replacement arrangement.
If it is not in the contract, do not assume it is included.
Keep a written record of the vehicle, services, liability and refund terms before paying.
The day: registration, briefing, checks and sessions
Arrive early and complete documents and equipment checks. An own car usually needs a technical check; a rental means learning the seat, wheel, gear engagement and emergency cut-off. After each session, check tyres, brakes, fluids and how you feel. A novice group still has faster cars, so looking ahead, giving way at the marked point and not moving suddenly matter more than chasing.
Use the venue briefing as the flag reference
Yellow usually means a hazard ahead, slow down and no overtaking; red means the session stops; black usually calls a specific car back to the pits. Pit-lane speed limits, queuing to exit, no reverse direction and no stopping on circuit are basic etiquette. The actual signals and procedures follow the venue briefing on the day.
